I think it's a BIOS issue that needs to be addressed and am waiting to hear back from Gateway/Acer on the problem. Going back to IDE and once again all was good. After making the proper registry and BIOS changes to allow an "on the fly" switch back to AHCI, I immediately ran into the same issues. This time everything functioned flawlessly. I changed the SATA mode from AHCI (which is the CMOS default) to IDE and did another reinstall. So I had a look in the BIOS at some settings.
I found it odd that it worked fine during the install and in the BIOS but was flaky once in Windows. However, I ran into the exact same issues with the "new" drive. I even went prepared with my precision screwdriver. I assumed it was a faulty drive and luckily Walmart let me swap drives with the display model right there in the store. When it was present in My Computer, selecting properties on the drive would freeze the properties dialogue box. The DVD would either not recognize any discs or disappear from DM altogether.

That really was annoying and inconsiderate, by both the hoarder AND WM too. He was well known to them, yet they seem to have done nothing to stop him clearing off with everything. It has been mentioned several times before, but some selfish bugger in the Niagara area cleared out several waves of HD DVDs from at least 4 WM stores. If enough people complained about hoarders, their local Walmart might actually change their policies when it comes to marked down products that they know will fly off the shelves. As long as there is no purchasing limit per customer this sort of thing is always going to happen. Tig wrote: ↑You'll never get everyone to agree on what's fair and what isn't.
I believe there a some good free imaging programs, sorry, the names don't come to mind because I use Acronis. that is if you have taken the time to back up your data somewhere besides the Gateway. If you crash, just reload the image with a few clicks instead of doing a recovery and having to re-install everything and all your precious data. If you have an extra external drive, best to make an image with say, AcronisTrueImage, and update it every few months. That shouldn't have created a problem, should it? I've allowed MS Update to update the system first. I recall having a problem burning restore discs on my Compaq's Optiarc drive too, though Verbatims, I believe, ultimately worked then.
The (Optiarc) drive reads and plays back burned DVD+Rs, but seems to be objecting to burning discs, at least through the included Gateway Recovery Management program. I've tried Verbatim, Fuji, and even "Vacoss" (all DVD+R) and all were rejected with an error message. Tornado F2 wrote: ↑Has anybody successfully burned system restore discs yet?
